Carta militare castiglione ESCAPE='HTML'

Historical notes

This territory is witness to a rich historic past and important stories. The construction of “castra” or fortifications during the period of Roman domination gives rise to the name Castrum Leonis (Castle of Lion) and so Castiglione, which was the most important in the valley. Since the early days its dominating position and the control of the road over the alps at San Pellegrino meant that it was considered an important area: this road was one of the easiest passages up the Appenines and was used by the armies. Thanks to its strategic position the Castle of Lion had a tortuous history and was often forced to defend itself from numerous attacks. The first of these attacks by Lucca in 1170 caused much damage. Lucca therefore had to bear the cost of the reconstruction and also elevated its status to Vicaria, or Vicarhip, but thanks to its domineering attitude and the heavy taxes it imposed, Castiglione formed itself at the head of league of Garfagnana communities which then rebelled against the Republic. In 1227 it found itself again under attack by the Lucchese soldiers and once more suffered destruction. The years that followed were troubled and were characterized by the many political fights in the region until finally, 1371 the fortress was consigned definitively to Lucca and peace settled over the area. The defensive structure was then reinforced and augmented by the construction of an encircling wall which we can still admire today. During the 15th century Castiglione was one of the very few communities which did not fall under the domination of the Estense family, and which remained loyal to Lucca. During the war with the Estense family, the fortress was subjected to particularly violent assaults between 1603 and 1613. After this there followed a long  period of peace which was disturbed only by minor boundary disputes with its neighbours. In 1815 at the Congress of Vienna, Castiglione passed to Maria Luisa of Bourbon, the Grand Duchess of Lucca, who in turn, ceded the territory to Franceso IV, the Duke of Modena in 1819 who finally had succeeded in gaining control of the entire Garfagnana.
